Tech publication The Information has revealed that Microsoft is developing MAI-1, a new large language model (LLM) anticipated to match the performance of leading models, such as OpenAI's GPT-4.

Here are the key details about MAI-1:

Previously, Microsoft focused on smaller AI models, but MAI-1 marks its entry into major AI development.

AI pioneer Mustafa Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind and Inflection AI, is spearheading this initiative at Microsoft since joining the company in March.

This development signifies Microsoft's ambition to be a major player across the entire AI spectrum. The company has already made significant investments in its Azure platform, enabling businesses to train AI models on the cloud.

Microsoft is expected to officially unveil the new model at its annual Build conference, which is set to occur later this month.

As for Microsoft's ongoing relationship with OpenAI, the tech giant has invested billions in OpenAI, gaining exclusive rights to use OpenAI’s GPT models for products like Bing and Copilot. It remains uncertain how their relationship will evolve as both entities now vie for leadership in the AI space.
