AI Miracles: Bilingual Patient Speaks Again!

Why AI Overviews Can Be Unreliable

Read Time : 2:25 sec

Hello Productive Minds!

The field of “neuroprosthetics,” focused on restoring brain function with technology, has existed since the 1960s. However, decoding thoughts across multiple languages has remained elusive for scientists—until now.

Why AI Overviews Aren’t Always Reliable

Source: Mashable

Detecting satire and exaggeration through a computer screen can be challenging. Without additional context or prior experiences, it’s easy to mistake a joke for a fact. The world's largest search engine is learning this lesson the hard way as its new AI-generated 'Overview' section struggles to distinguish between serious information and humor.

Here are some of the questionable pieces of advice allegedly shared by the Overview feature:

  • Suggesting someone apply glue to their pizza to prevent the cheese from sliding off

  • Recommending a smoothie recipe because it was "my kids' favorite"

  • Instructing someone to suck venom out of a rattlesnake bite, which is dangerous

  • Quoting supposed advice from UC Berkeley geologists to eat "at least one small rock" per day for health reasons

These examples highlight a common issue: AI hallucinations, where models confidently provide incorrect information. While every AI company faces this problem, critics note that, unlike other platforms, users can’t easily opt out of receiving AI-generated answers here.

Rethinking licensing deals: Many struggling media companies and platforms have partnered with AI companies, allowing their material to be used for training in exchange for compensation. However, this doesn’t guarantee the accuracy or lack of bias in the information. For example, the glue-topped pizza recommendation likely originated from a joke Reddit post by a user named "f—smith," not the most reliable source.

Keep in mind: Some users intentionally provoke AI to generate absurd responses. Most people probably won’t encounter these types of answers unless they actively seek them out. Ironically, when users do uncover misinformation, it helps the company identify and correct these errors, potentially improving accuracy in the future.

How to analyze your data using interactive tables in ChatGPT

  • Go to ChatGPT and select GPT-4o as your model.

  • Upload your data file to ChatGPT (do not enter any sensitive information into ChatGPT)

  • Now click on the expand button to explore your data.

  • Click on a specific column and type your prompt - ChatGPT will understand that you are referring to the selected column.

  • Write in your prompt for that specific column, for instance: “What’s the total?”

  • ChatGPT will give you the total of that column.

  • You can also create new tables within ChatGPT.

  • Describe what you want to calculate and GPT-4o will create a table with the new values.

AI Restores Patient's Bilingual Abilities

Scientists have already developed technology to translate thought patterns into text, significantly aiding stroke victims in communicating with loved ones. However, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco identified a crucial gap: those who speak multiple languages, which includes nearly half of the global population. Recently, they announced the creation of the first brain implant capable of decoding thoughts in both Spanish and English using AI.

How does it work? The study focused on a patient named Pancho, who survived a stroke but was paralyzed at age 20. He could make sounds but couldn't form complete words or sentences. In 2019, a chip was implanted on Pancho’s cortex to collect data on how his brain activity corresponded with different words. By learning from these patterns, the neural network eventually enabled Pancho to communicate in real time.

Initially, the system could only translate thoughts into English, despite Pancho’s native language being Spanish. The team then retrained the interface to switch between both languages, allowing Pancho to communicate more naturally. “Our long-term goal has never been just about replacing words, but about restoring connection for people,” neurosurgeon Edward Chang told Nature.

Why it’s important: To decode Pancho’s Spanish-language thoughts, researchers used the same brain region that processes his English-language skills. This finding suggests that the same parts of the brain are involved in learning multiple languages. The scientists aim to expand the field of "neuroprosthesis" to help more patients restore their ability to communicate.
