The International Olympic Committee is using AI to protect athletes

Understandably, the Olympics is an enormous pressure cooker, as thousands of athletes compete to be called the best in the world at their sport. Organizers fear this summer's games could be even more cutthroat than usual because of this Middle East and European political clash.

The Challenge of Moderating Social Media

The IOC expects there will be about 500 million Olympic-related social media posts this year — not all friendly. It's a rate that no human moderator could keep up with. "If someone were to take only one second to read each post, it would take them 16 years to go through," IOC President Thomas Bach told reporters last week.

The Role of AI

Here's where AI comes in:

The IOC is expected to deploy an AI tool to flag and delete abuse in over 35 languages to protect 15,000 athletes and organizers from harassment.

The program will help researchers figure out how prevalent the problem is and how abuse can affect the well-being of athletes.

A Groundbreaking Initiative

It will be the first time AI is used to protect so many athletes simultaneously.

Controversy and Concerns

Why not everyone supports the plan: It was unclear if the IOC could push against the will of social media sites, but some privacy experts are concerned that the group is overreaching. The French government has faced scrutiny, too, given that it's working with four companies to track crowd movement, weapon detection, and other potentially dangerous metrics with AI-enhanced cameras — something that civil liberties advocates say could be misused.

Justification from Organizers

A counterpoint: The Olympic organizers, for their part, say they have good reason to be concerned. Earlier this month, Microsoft released a report outlining how Russian agents produced a fake documentary to defame the Olympic Committee—in what appeared to be retaliation for the country's exclusion from this year's games. It also created and distributed fake images of threatening graffiti posted all over Paris to scare people away.
